Community Outreach

The Academy contributes to the community by…

Offering music courses in the UFV ElderCollege program

Last year, Principal Graham Yates presented six interactive, multimedia lectures on symphonic literature called “The Curse of the Ninth.”

Providing financial assistance and competitive scholarships

Last year, we awarded over $18,000 in competitive in-house scholarships, needs-based bursaries to new and returning students, and post-secondary music scholarships to School District 33 graduates.

Coordinating faculty and student entertainment for community events

Last year, students and faculty performed at the Cultural Centre Opening Week, the Opening Gala and the Open House.  Students also performed at the Rotary Club‘s “Garden and Lifestyle Tour,” the Chamber of Commerce‘s “Chamber Connections” reception, the Bruins‘ “Score One for the Arts” hockey game, and PROBUS‘s 20th anniversary celebration.

Organizing and producing  concerts, recitals and events that feature both students and professionals

Last year, our students performed in two free public concerts, the Canadian Music Concert and the Student Honours Concert. Our Festival Chorus performed Handel’s Messiah at Christmas.  Our faculty and students performed at the Faculty Showcase Concert and the English Cream Tea.

Providing music outreach programs

Last year, our Tayosei Performing Group offered 25 downtown elementary students the opportunity to learn and perform choral music, ukulele and hand drumming at no charge.  We also partnered with Chilliwack Community Services to offer needy families a complimentary Kindermusik series.

Participating with other community groups to sponsor and produce the Music and More Summer Concert and Activity Series

Last July, despite the weather cancelling two performances, audiences enjoyed two outdoor concerts by the groups Wee Hours Trio and White Knuckle Brass.

Jointly administering the Young Artist Solo Competition with the Chilliwack Symphony

Last year, soprano Nina Payne and pianist Janelle van Maren earned the opportunity to perform with the Symphony and received a cash award.

Giving all students in the community reduced admission to Academy performances

Last year, students purchased tickets to the Festival Chorus concerts at only $5, and Academy society members received $5 off their ticket to the Faculty Showcase Concert.
